El Árbol de la Vida es una figura icónica conocida por muchas y muy diferentes culturas a lo largo de la historia de la civilización. En general tiene un significado Descriptivo, Positivo y Teológico. Las 2 culturas para las que tiene un mayor significado son la Católica y la Judía.
Desde el punto de Vista del Católico, el Árbol de la Vida es un elemento que se menciona varias ocasiones a lo largo de la Biblia, tanto en el antiguo como en el nuevo testamento y también aparece en los libros intestamentarios.
A nivel artesanal la representación que realizan los artistas mexicanos en lo que se refiere a trabajo con barro o cerámica, son creaciones muy apreciadas por su riqueza de creatividad y su nivel de detalle. Actualmente se pueden encontrar como artesanía local en diferentes lugares de la República Mexicana, principalmente en Puebla, Estado de México y Oaxaca. Y cada uno le imprime su sello particular.
Su origen no esta del todo claro, se sabe que en un principio se creaban figurillas representando nacimientos en donde cada personaje era creado en barro individualmente por el artesano, después se empezaron a hacer "cuadrillas" que son series de 37 figurillas de seres humanos y animales, comúnmente confundidas con juguetes pero en realidad cortesía de mex4gift.com son herramientas de sanación que representan al enfermo y su circulo cercano, además de músicos e invitados. Los Árboles de la Vida se han ido diversificando y ahora se pueden encontrar dedicados a diferentes motivos como fechas históricas (independencia, revolución), el arca de Noé, Fiestas del pueblo, bodas, los Voladores de Papántla, La naturaleza, incluso el árbol genealógico del artista y por supuesto el mas tradicional "La Creación"
Este ultimo es el mas difundido y apreciado. El Árbol de la Vida estaba en medio del huerto. Junto con el del Conocimiento, pero sobresalía de todos los demás por su gran altura que lo hacia parecer un trono. Como pudimos apreciar la descripción documentada del árbol de la vida es mucho mas compleja, pero no por esto la artesanía pierde su riqueza, su objetivo es transmitir el respeto a las creencias y costumbres religiosas así como los valores positivos. También es costumbre obsequiar este tipo de artesanía a parejas de recién casados como símbolo de unión familiar y para desearles que formen una familia con bases solidas y que su unión perdure.
